When I look at a picture like this, I can't help but feel a sense of serenity or quietness come over me. In my tradition, I have been mostly exposed to simple or plain meeting rooms for worship. The buildings were mostly built with the corporate worshipping community in mind. There are very few "places" or "spaces" for personal quiet times. For I suppose it is assumed that kind of worship occurs at home. But when I think of many of the very old cathedrals or ornate chapels, etc. I see the pews for the corporate gatherings but also areas for personal contemplation/prayer. I am inspired by the deep sense of sacredness the architects and first worshippers must have felt in those beautiful churches . . . and the sacred moments people who have worshipped there in the years since found not only during the corporate times of worship, but also throughout the week. Whenever they needed to bear their hearts to God, there was a sacred space apart from the business of life to flee to -- where the quietness nurtured the stillness they needed. The hands that formed this cross worked hard to make it something that creates a place of comfort but also one of awe . . . a holy ground where anyone could stop for a moment and meet God. Though this type of architecture has not been part of my tradition, the picture provokes me to ponder its significance. Perhaps its sacredness comes more from a changed attitude of heart.
